What's the difference between MTL and DTL?

In the big world of vaping, there are many terms and abbreviations that can be perceived as confusing and messy, we have previously created a post where we have listed all vape terms, so if you're interested in reading about vaping all the terms in the world, you can look here.

In this post we will cover the big and requested question: What is the difference between MTL and DTL vaping?

The big difference between MTL (mouth to lung) and DTL (direct to lung) is that with MTL vaping you use an electronic cigarette with a low power (for example 10-30W) but usually you vape e-liquids with higher nicotine strength (for example nicsalt e-liquid with a nicotine content of 20mg) as well as e-liquids with a lower VG content (for example 50VG / 50PG).

Below you will find a table of e-liquids with different VG/PG contents and electronic cigarettes with different adaptations

70 VG / 30 PG E-juice 50 VG / 50 PG E-juice MTL E-cigarettes DTL E-cigarettes
Pachamama Innovation Joyetech eGo AIO Vaporesso Target PM80
Naked 100 Pura Lite Vaporesso OSMALL VooPoo Drag X
Dr. Koyuki Liqua VOOM Pod Starter Pack Vaporesso Swag 2

When it comes to DTL vaping, you use an electronic cigarette with a high power (for example 60-230W) and e-liquids with lower nicotine strength (for example 3mg-6mg) with a higher VG content, but more about VG /PG levels further down in the post.

How do I know if my e-liquid is for MTL or DTL?

To ensure that your e-liquid is compatible with MTL or DTL devices, you should take a look at what kind of VG/PG content the e-liquid has.

An e-liquid consists of ingredients called vegetable glycerine and abbreviated with the initials (VG) and is the ingredient that makes the e-liquid either "thick" or "thin", the higher the VG content, the thicker the e-liquid -liquid and requires higher power (watts) for the e-liquid to vaporize.

Propylene glycol is abbreviated as (PG) and determines how "ripe" the e-liquid should be.

E-liquid with a high PG content is appreciated by former cigarette smokers as it reminds of the "tear" in the throat that you get from cigarettes.

How do I vape MTL (Mouth to Lung)?

It might sound like a simple question but there is a thought process behind the whole idea of vaping MTL is that the sensation should be mimicked of smoking a cigarette. MTL is the vaping style that most closely resembles smoking tobacco cigarettes.

Below we go through step by step how to vape MTL.

  1. Take a soft & long drag from the mouthpiece
  2. When the vapor is in your mouth, draw the vapor down to your lungs
  3. Blow out the vapor

How do I vape DTL (Direct to Lung)?

Here, too, there is a process for vaping DTL. A DTL puff usually lasts between 3-5 seconds.

Below we go through step by step how to vape DTL.

  1. Take a long, steady draw from the mouthpiece
  2. Inhale for about 3-5 seconds
  3. Blow out the vapor

What style of vaping is recommended?

Recommending MTL or DTL is difficult and is a matter of taste what the user likes for type of vaping, for example DTL focuses more on taste & vapor production while MTL gives an authentic feeling of smoking cigarettes IE a "stronger" throat-hit as it is called.

So what is the difference between MTL and DTL vaping?

The difference between MTL and DTL is that the vaping styles are vaped on different devices and power, even with different VG/PG levels.

  • MTL vaping is used below 30 watts and with an e-liquid with a VG content up to 50% (eg 50 VG / PG 50)
High resistance on the coil (MTL) = All coils with an ohm number above 1.0 ohm
  • DTL vaping is used on over 60 watts and e-liquid with a VG content from 70% and above (eg VG 70 / PG 30)
Low resistance on the coil (DTL, Sub ohm) = All coils under 1.0ohm
